PRESSROOM
cbm is the world’s largest and most trusted organization serving people living in poverty with disability. Each year we touch over 16 million lives in the world’s poorest countries.
cbm has been helping the world’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged people transform their own lives for over 100 years. In 2009, the 9 millionth person had their sight restored through a cbm cataract operation.
cbm focuses on disability because it causes poverty and because it is caused by poverty. The problem of poverty cannot be solved without addressing the downward spiral of poverty and disability.
cbm is recognized as a professional organization by United Nations and the World Health Organization, and is supported by the generosity of hundreds of thousands of donors worldwide.
100,000 Miracles
- 37 million people in the world are blind
- nearly half of these people (18 million) are blind in both eyes because of catracts – and could have their sight restored through a 12-minute surgery – a miracle!
- Cataract surgery is regarded as the most cost-effective surgery in the world, taking people from disability to ability literally overnight.
- The average cost of cataract surgery for an adult is $33. To restore sight to a child we use general anaesthetic (so the child doesn't move out of fear) at an average cost of $200.
100,000 Miracles – 100 Days, 100,000 miracles of sight!
Begining October 1, 2009 and over the next 100 days, cbm is raising funds to give sight to men, women and children who are struggling to survive blindness and extreme poverty.
